Cruise Ships Compare Ships & Cruise Ports

The Sunshine class (once known as the Destiny class) may be the most unusual class of ships in the Carnival fleet. On paper, the ships in this class are among the oldest vessels that Carnival operates. However, you also can make an argument that they are among the newest vessels in the line.

Also, there are always several music venues where you'll find live performers in the afternoons and evenings, including — on some ships — the Atrium Bar and a secondary hub area called Ocean Plaza. There's almost always a piano bar that's home to lively singalongs. When it comes to raucous, though, nothing on Carnival ships quite compares to the frequent karaoke nights on board. Sometimes held in a secondary lounge or a shipboard pub, karaoke on Carnival draws a big crowd.

The Many Different Classes Of Carnival Ships (Biggest To Smallest)

Jubilee has a gross tonnage of 183,521 GT and can accommodate 5,374 passengers at double-capacity. Here is a list of every Carnival cruise ship from newest to oldest that will be updated as new ships enter Carnival’s fleet. The ships range from the 70,000 gross ton Fantasy class to the 180,000 Excel class LNG powered cruise ships. At just 88,000 gross tons, Spirit Class ships are considered mid-sized vessels that can hold right around 2,100 passengers.

Carnival Conquest: Best ship for budget travelers

On one of Carnival's newest ships, Carnival Panorama, there's no RedFrog Pub, but the Smokehouse Brewhouse has a stage that's home to live music nightly and some of the ship's karaoke sessions. Carnival is also well known for the Punchliner Comedy Clubs on its ships, which draw quality comedians and can get a little raucous late at night with adult-only performances. In addition, every ship has at least one — and usually several — extra-charge eateries. The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively. Every vessel has two main dining rooms and a casual buffet eatery where meals are included in the fare. For dinner in the main dining room, you must sign up for either Your Time dining (you go whenever you want) or Traditional Dining (you have a fixed table and time for dinner).

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options within the Carnival fleet is that the line's ships can easily be bunched into just eight groups of vessels that have similar amenities. Carnival Liberty is another Conquest-class vessel that entered service in 2005. She was the first ship in the fleet to receive all the FUN 2.0 enhancements in 2011, including popular venues Guy’s Burger Joint and the Alchemy Bar. Carnival Freedom is the final ship in the popular Conquest-class, ending an era of ship class and design for the cruise line.

For many years, Carnival steered clear of the big ship trends in the industry. Executives thought the ever-bigger vessels being deployed by such lines as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises were too big to make for an enjoyable cruise experience. Unlike Royal Caribbean and some other cruise lines, Carnival doesn't always drastically change the design of its ships from class to class. Other than these two ships, Carnival's biggest vessel is the 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia, which measures just 135,225 tons.

On Carnival ships in Australia, smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. In fact, when it comes to waterslides on ships, Carnival is the cruise world's king. There's now at least one waterslide on all but one ship in the Carnival fleet (Carnival Luminosa) — something no other line can say. Note that Carnival's two oldest ships — those that are part of the 1990s-built Fantasy Class — have relatively few balcony cabins by today's standards.

Carnival Destiny was the first passenger cruise ship ever built over 100,000 gross tons in size. The 3,002 passenger ship is currently 102,853 gross tons after the remodel. The first Dream class ship from Carnival Cruise Line, Carnival Dream was the first Carnival ship to be over 120,000 gross tons in size. The ship debuted in 2009 at 128,000 GT and carries 3,646 passengers. Carnival Jubilee is the third Excel-class ship with the cruise line and was entered into service in December of 2023. The ship is currently homeporting in Galveston, Texas and is the first brand-new ship to homeport at the Texas port.

Carnival Vista is 133,500 GRTs and carries 3,934 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ships have relatively fewer amenities and venues than the newer and bigger Carnival ships. You won't find giant water parks on these vessels as you would on newer Carnival ships.

Check the decks on Mardi Gras® and plan all the fun you're going to have on board. Whether it’s casual munching or sit-down elegance you’re hungry for, we can’t wait to share all this dining variety with you. Playlist Productions™ takes songs you know and presents them like you’ve never known them before.

Originally designed and ordered for Italy-based Costa Cruises — a sister brand to Carnival — the ship is actually a sister vessel to Costa's four Concordia-class ships. It will be familiar to anyone who knows Carnival ships because the design of Costa's Concordia class was based upon the design of Carnival's Conquest class, and the two classes are very similar. Interior venues on Dream-class ships include Punchliner comedy clubs, piano bars, casinos and showrooms for big production shows. The dining options are similar to what you'll find on Vista-class ships; Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, steakhouses and the Italian eatery Cucina Del Capitano are included on all three vessels.

However, for many years it chose not to follow rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships. Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ship on the list of the 50 biggest cruise ships. Seven of the line's 25 vessels measure less than 100,000 tons, which makes them almost midsize by today's cruise ship standards. We’re at home anywhere we sail… but you can only have one hometown, and for Carnival that is unmistakably Miami.

Note that even after the makeovers, the ships still don't have all the bells and whistles of Carnival's truly new ships, such as Carnival Panorama. As noted above, Carnival's newest ships are bigger than its older ships, allowing for more attractions, restaurants and lounges. The overhaul of Carnival Sunshine, which took place in 2013, brought similar changes, as well as a complete renovation of the ship's pool area that incorporated a multideck waterfall. This is because each of the ships in this series has been almost completely gutted and rebuilt from the waterline up.

Currently, the 1998-built Carnival Elation is the oldest ship in the fleet. The vessel has a guest capacity of 2,124 at double occupancy, along with 930 international crew members. Carnival Splendor is 113,300, just slightly larger than the Conquest-class vessels. She has a guest capacity of 3,012 and 1,150 international crew members. The Carnival Luminosa was formerly known as Costa Luminosa before she transferred from the sister brand Costa Cruises in 2022. The Spirit-class vessel began sailing following a dry dock to receive her new Carnival colors in September 2022.

The ship has something for every type of traveler, including three kids clubs, adult-only spaces, and over a dozen different dining options. Around the ship, you’ll find spaces like Phantom Lounge and Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab, where you can see shows or dance the night away. When you’re ready to soak up the sun, find a lounge chair at the adults-only pool deck or splash down on one of the slides at WaterWorks.

Carnival Mircale is the latest ship in the Spirit-class from Carnival Cruise Line. The vessel was constructed in Helsinki, Finland and was completed in 2004. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. On "elegant" nights, you'll see a range of clothing from ball gowns, dresses that leave little to the imagination, tuxes and suits to the same shorts and tees people sport all day long. Most men, however, opt for long pants and collared shirts, while women don sundresses, or a skirt or pants with a blouse.
